ふと、動画からサムネイル画像を作成できないかと思って、いろいろ調べてみたところ、
ffmpegというライブラリがありました。

これを入れて、PHPのextensionを入れて、動画の特定フレームから
サムネイルを作成することができるようになりました。

サーバーが自由にいじれるので、こういうところは自在でいいですね。
