当時は、こんな便利なものが消えるはずはないと思っていた。

しかし、ポケットベルには「カラベル」という致命的な欠点があった。
カラベルとは、「番号非通知」となったコールのことである。

実は、ポケットベルが［ナンバーディスプレイ機能］をようやく獲得したのはサービスの末期だったのだ。もはや手遅れだった。

番号通知機能が無いから、
呼び出すとき、金庫でも解錠するような複雑な操作でメッセージを作る必要だった。
それに失敗すると「カラベル」が送出されるのだ。

ポケベルユーザーとしては、カラベルに悩まされるから、頼りない人に呼び出し番号を教えるわけにはいかず、
「いつでも・どこでも」まではいいが、「誰とでも」というわけにはいかなかった。

テレホンカードと公衆電話は行き渡っていたのに、
ポケットベルは自らその用途を狭めていた。

それは凋落というしかなかった。
