ただ、故障が多かったとか。

それでも、その日の故障は最悪だった。

長崎市の北の入り口、打坂。馬を鞭で打たないと登らない坂という意味らしい。またの名を地獄坂。曲がりくねった道、片側は崖。現在では想像もつかないが、当時の地形図はまさにそうなっている。

そこで故障。

ハンドルもブレーキも効かない、最悪の事態。

バスはずるずると崖に向かって後退していく……。

若い車掌が飛び降りた。

近くの石をタイヤに噛ませ、輪止めとするが、三十余の乗客の重みのかかった車体はそれを乗り越えた。

ずるずると、ずるずると、崖へ。

しかし、奇跡は起きた。

何かに乗り上げてバスは止まった。

……もう、想像はつくのではないだろうか。降り立った乗客や運転手が見たものを。

横たわった車掌の体と、それに乗り上げたタイヤ……。

急報を受けた麓の営業所の職員は、軽トラックで現場に向かい、彼を荷台に載せた。

しかし、炎天下。その息は徐々に弱くなっていく。

……結局、助からなかった。

この勇敢な車掌の名は、鬼塚道男さん。享年、二十一。

こんな大切なことが長く人々の記憶から消えていた。

そのことがどうしても信じられない。

現場に地蔵尊が祀られ、顕彰碑が建ったのも時を経てからだった。
